Ex-Display Gubi Semi Pendant White Small

The Semi lamp was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architects, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup. Semi was conceived as a unique pendant lamp and was formed from a semi circle profile cut in half, placed back-to-back and then hand spun in aluminium. With its distinctive arc shaped, enamelled shade, lightness of form and timeless design, the elegant Semi pendant achieved great success, gaining wide recognition, iconic status and becoming for a time, the best-selling Danish design in the world. The distinctive Semi silhouette creates a strong horizontal line and gives a cone shaped down light ideal for over work surfaces or dining tables.

Dimensions: Diameter 30cm. H 15cm.

Torsten Thorup (born 1944) and Claus Bonderup (born 1943) both graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture in 1969 and subsequently both went to work at Danish architect, Henning Larsen's studio. Together Bonderup and Thorup came up with what was to become one of the best selling Danish light designs of all time, the Semi pendant. Reacting against the cosy design era that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create something that incorporated sharp, clean lines and geometric form. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize. The two architects continued to work together for the majority of their careers, designing watches and in-store displays for Georg Jensen, the Arktikum museum in Finland and the harbour area in Elsinore, where they designed everything, from urban planning to the ticket offices.

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen. They initially focused on producing Olsen's furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector but changed direction in 2001 after they were joined by their sons who had returned after some years working in the fashion industry. Since then Gubi have transposed the original creative vision into a contemporary context, placing themselves on the map as a global player on the design scene. They see themselves as treasure hunters, where curiosity, courage and intuition are key components for success. It involves travelling, searching and finding long forgotten remnants from the past as well as contemporary, cutting-edge designs from new artists on the horizon. In an ever-changing international landscape, it takes an enormous amount of drive and determination to keep chasing icons. It's that type of endless energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit which has catapulted Gubi into an iconic status all its own.
