OUR STORY

Rume was established over fifteen years ago when husband and wife Richard and Libby Baker left the family furniture firm to establish their own separate but complementary company. The philosophy behind the new business was to delight in the beautiful and the beautifully made and to pursue this by making lovely furniture of original design to the very highest standards here in England.

Taking the idea of classic English furniture as a starting point Richard stripped it back to its barest essentials to capture its inimitable timelessness. It is this enduring yet contemporary quality that is quintessentially Rume.

The pieces are never mere copies, never pastiche, they are resolute in their contained elegance and confidence, furniture that is both familiar and startlingly original. To complement this contradiction Libby started to gather together an unrestrained collection of accessories and cushions from just about everywhere.

The idea was not to choose items that would simply blend or fade into the background but to source objects that would not only hold their own but also work together, it was in fact an extension of what Richard and Libby had been doing for years in their own home.

With the inclusion of beautiful lighting from some of the most regarded designers and manufacturers in the world it has developed over time into a unique look, one of playful sophistication and elegant eclecticism. There is no reason why a well considered interior has to be dull or dutiful and Richard and Libby have made it their mission to slay the overstuffed, to jolly up the earnest mantelpiece and to banish once and for all the boring beige.

Richard and Libby live in Hove with their three young sons just a stone's throw from their lovely Hove store. The store is open Monday to Saturday 10.00am until 5.30pm and on Sundays and bank holidays by appointment only. Between Christmas and New Year and also in mid August it is worth contacting us if you are travelling any distance as we have been known to run away to Cornwall for a few days without warning.
