Calavera Huichol Beaded Skulls Silver
What is death but a dream? The Huichol community of the Free State of Jalisco, Mexico, understands this perfectly and have imbued moulded skulls with the pattern of their dreams in an effort to mitigate death’s solemnity. Hand placing and pressing silver and black beads into Campeche beeswax the Huichol community patiently employ the symbols and images from their pre-Columbian culture. These old skills demonstrate the Huichol's exceptional ability to turn simple objects into refined pieces full of magic, pattern and colour. Like dreams no two are same and they are just as easily open to interpretation, with that in mind if you wish to avoid a surprise please contact us and we will send you images of the skulls we currently have and you can choose.

The Huichol are an indigenous people of Mexico living in the Free State of Jalisco in the Sierra Madre Occidental Range. They are best known to the larger world as the Huichol, however, they refer to themselves as Wixáritari, 'The people' in their native Huichol language. The Huichol have always been a very industrious and creative people especially in the making of their unique yarn paintings but recently, with more readily available raw materials, they have turned those skills to the production of artifacts for sale. Perhaps the most renowned of these are the skulls they make to loosen the grip of death. These skulls display the extraordinary ability of the maker and have become appreciated as collectable items around the world as people get acquainted with the idea of death being potentially as beautiful as birth.
The PI in PI Project stands for 'Patrimonio Inmaterial,' Spanish for Intangible Heritage, a concept that involves knowledge and techniques inherited by generations which are crystallized into handcrafted pieces that express the talent of those communities. PI work with organized groups of Indigenous and Mestizo people in Mexico, searching for the essential knowledge that forges ethnic identity and that helps to resist cultural standardization. They are a French-Mexican company with experience in community development projects and heritage education. Fascinated by Mexico’s multiculturalism, they seek to support and promote these communities and their unique handcrafted pieces in order to preserve the cultural expression of Mexican artisans.
