Timorous Beasties Ex Libris

The Ex Libris cushion in some ways encapsulates the work of Glaswegian design house Timorous Beasties being as it is a collection of simple antecedent parts melded into a sophisticated new whole. To glance at Ex Libris is to fall down a rabbit hole of psychedelic possibilities. The Bee seems to be floating on a highly colourful abstract background which gives a 3D effect, this vivid digitally printed on velvet extravagance is purest Timorous and really does deserve the oft quoted ‘William Morris on acid’ epithet. The effect is slightly disorientating and completely captivating and again proves the power of a simple idea ingeniously applied.

Timorous Beasties was established in Glasgow in 1990 by Alistair Mcauley and Paul Simmons who met studying textile design at Glasgow school of art. Timorous Beasties’ work embodies a unique diversity of pattern, ranging from designs that echo a golden age of copperplate engraving to examples of a distinctly edgy nature. In 2004 Timorous Beasties unveiled their critically acclaimed Glasgow Toile, by reversing the pastoral context they transformed the traditional toile to create an exclusively modern urban genre. This was followed by the Hotch Blotch fabric series placing disorder within the structure of damask pattern to reveal the inherent beauty of splatters, drips and blotches. Hunting Toile and Urban wallpaper marked a synthesis of 18th-century chinoiserie groupings to create a contemporary ornamental pattern repeat. Timorous Beasties mine the seam between nature, art and society and promote a world view, where plants, animals and society are visually inextricable.
