Areaware Blockitecture Factory

Blockitecture is a simply brilliant idea. Not world changing, this is not a big idea, it is small, and from this small idea great things can grow. With this new series of factory themed differently shaped blocks it is possible to place and balance them in constantly surprising formations to create your own unique urban factory. With cantilevers, towers and buttresses it is tempting to collect a few sets and combine them to orchestrate your architecture, consider your conurbation and mould your municipality. Be the urban planner of Blockicity but beware, a keen eye, steady hand and a steeplejacks nerve are required to build your vision or else it can all come tumbling down and once your city has fallen it may prove difficult for you to rebuild it exactly as it was. But that is half the fun, as is the case with most urban planing you never really know what you are going to get until it is built.

James Paulius was born in Chicago, on Lake Michigan, Illinois in the USA. He was a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated in 2013. Paulius is interested in the designed element as object, he strives to create products that integrate people with their environment, products which, of them self promote creativity, curiosity and joy. He has a great belief in the positive aura of change, in our ability to influence society and culture through conscious creation. The continuous note of our surroundings inspires him to design elements and artifacts that are harmonious and sensitive towards their placement and the effects they may have on humans. His Blockitecture wooden blocks have shown how this credo can be applied to the very small as well as the very large, allowing citizens the opportunity to create their very own mini cityscape and to balance all of the precarious possibilities. From within simplicity the greatest of complexities can emerge and flourish.

Areaware is a design and manufacturing company based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the good ole US of A. They like to think of themselves as a producer of everyday objects that are functional and unusual but this doesn’t really come close to describing how singular they are. Working with an extraordinary roll call of innovative and visionary young designers Areaware are pushing the boundaries on product design creating thoughtful items that inspire an immediate emotional response. Critical to their success is a very healthy sense of humour which threads its way through everything they produce. This does not trivialise what they do but potentially transforms the prosaic into the poetic, galvanizing young and local talent in the process, and raising hopes of becoming a new voice for American design. Areaware believe quite rightly that the appreciation of beauty is central to human life itself and want to embody this principle in even the simplest of things.
