Santa & Cole AJ Royal

The AJ Royal floor light was designed by Arne Jacobsen for the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen in 1956 and still looks as fresh today as it did then. The light is unusual in that the elliptical shade is attached to the stem off centre and gives the impression of floating in mid-air. The shape of the white linen shade is mirrored in the grey painted heavy iron base which seems cast upon the floor like a shadow. Connected by a slim shaft of bright steel the AJ Royal is a thoughtful composition on elegant restraint. With twin light fittings and a threaded pendant switch the light can, through a series of pulls, illuminate with both bulbs or just one. This clever dimming effect allows the use of any bulb so the AJ is just as happy with LED’s as it with standard incandescents. The shade diffuses softly and gives off a lovely even light and with its slim dimension the AJ is perfect in hallways, corners and next to sofas.

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was certainly one of the most influential designers to ever graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Arts. Whilst Jacobsen was a successful architect, renowned for his Bellavista Apartments (1933-34), Rødovre Town Hall (1957) and the SAS Royal Hotel (1955-59) he is probably best remembered for his simple, timeless and functional interior products. Jacobsen was nothing if not prolific, working in textiles, wallpaper, silverware, lighting and furniture and designing pieces of such elegant restraint that they are still revered to this day, the Ant, Swan, and Egg chair, the Bellevue and AJ series of lamps, to name but a few. In 1956, Jacobsen returned to the Royal Danish Academy and taught architecture for 11 years (1956-1965). However, he continued to design products and buildings right up to his unexpected death in 1971. Today his legacy as an avant-garde designer lives on in his products that, over fifties years later, are still seen as modern.

Santa & Cole is a small, independent manufacturer of well-designed products. With its roots in Barcelona in Spain it works in over 70 countries, driven and determined to foster the quest for good civil coexistence. Santa & Cole has been exploring industrial design since 1985, scrutinising everyday objects to find their best use experience and selecting those that most consider material culture. In any society, however primitive, the material culture can raise the spirit just as much as the intangible culture. Santa & Cole edits household and urban furniture and lighting, ranging from indoor lamps to large street lamps and benches for pedestrians. We also produce trees, in our nurseries in Belloch, and publish books, which set out the lines that we feel all would be wise to follow. Although our range of products might seem random, they actually converge in a common philosophy, not accumulating but rather selecting, not delighting in quantity but rather in quality, not to show but rather to share.
