Normann Copenhagen Norm 06

The Norm 06 shades are lovely lights with a gentle Danish sensibility but which come with a considerable caveat. They arrive flat packed. If you haven’t got two diligent hours to spare and are prone to screaming into your fist when trying to fold a napkin then this might not be the light for you. Be warned, assembling a Norm is like trying to knit a computer, in a bath of treacle, whilst wearing boxing gloves and singing ging gang goolie in Swahili. It is tricky. Shouting may ensue. Don’t get me wrong, it is definitely worth it, it's just that you might not think so at the time. Satisfaction will creep up on you like a cudgel but once you realise that the struggle is over, and that with any luck you will never have to do it again, you will begin to appreciate what a fabulous thing you have made. A delightful soothing flower of white interlocking petals of various number, depending on the size of Norm you have chosen. Try to anticipate this calm during the construction phase, it might be the only thing that stops you sitting on it.

Simon Karkov is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture and brings a distinct structural sensibility to everything he creates. Since the sixties he has been working for several architecture offices in Denmark and has for the past 10 years worked mainly for the Municipality of Frederiksberg. During this period he left his mark on several projects including the magnificent Frederiksberg Hospital and Frederiksberg Gymnasium. He is a firm believer in the power of the first sketch which he then refines before turning it into a practical model. The model is then adjusted over a period of time until the final prototype can be created. It was this process that was applied to possibly his most renowned work the Norm lighting series for Normann Copenhagen. This collection of modern self assembly hanging lights and lamps are instantly recognizable and strike a wonderful chord in almost any interior. Simon Karkov is retired and living in Turkey but still lends his vision to new projects that speak to him.

Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up in 1999 hoping to find a new form of expression within the design industry. In 2002 they launched their first product, the lamp Norm 69 under the name: Normann Copenhagen, a brand was born. Within five years the Normann Copenhagen range consisted of almost 40 products including sculptural lighting, stunning textiles and clever home accessories and they had broadened their design horizons by collaborating with established names as well new talents from around the world. In 2009 Normann Copenhagen decided it was time to introduce furniture pieces as well, original, bold and eye-catching pieces with simple and contemporary designs that could withstand the test of time. Today Normann Copenhagen continues to introduce exciting and boldly designed products but the choice of colour has become of particular importance often changing seasonally and being inspired by trends you might more likely find in the fashion world.
