Normann Copenhagen Krenit Bowl 25

These reissued Krenit bowls are by Normann Copenhagen and are a most welcome return of a Danish classic. Originally designed by Herbert Krenchel in 1953 the Krenit bowls have lost none of their contemporary edge and strike a perfect balance between function and aestheticism. In fact it is the edge of the Krenit bowl which is a large part of its timeless appeal. A fine horizon of steel where the bright colour of the enameled interior gives way to the black near matt of the exterior creating a dramatic line of fabulous contrast. The Krenit shape is instantly recognisable and became the template for many of the bowls that came after it. Often copied but never bettered the larger bowls are perfect for fruit bowls or for salads, when used with non metal utensils, or just as delightful decorative form on a table, shelf or sideboard.

Herbert Krenchel graduated with a Master of Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark with his mind firmly set on a research career focussing on materials and fiber reinforcement. However since the 1950’s, simultaneously with his research, Krenchel also developed a successful interest in industrial design. His most renowned design is probably the enameled Krenit bowl which won the gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale and which fulfilled Krenchel’s passion for shapes, textures and structures. Krenchel believes that the surface of a designed object is important because it makes people want to reach out for it and once they do must satisfy their curiosity and innate desire for balance between function and aesthetics. A good design must therefore contain more than one aspect to make the perfect overall impression. Kerchell’s inspiration is absorbed from the surrounding environment and as such can’t be explained, design is self expression, it is a way to create a world just the way you want it.

Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up in 1999 hoping to find a new form of expression within the design industry. In 2002 they launched their first product, the lamp Norm 69 under the name: Normann Copenhagen, a brand was born. Within five years the Normann Copenhagen range consisted of almost 40 products including sculptural lighting, stunning textiles and clever home accessories and they had broadened their design horizons by collaborating with established names as well new talents from around the world. In 2009 Normann Copenhagen decided it was time to introduce furniture pieces as well, original, bold and eye-catching pieces with simple and contemporary designs that could withstand the test of time. Today Normann Copenhagen continues to introduce exciting and boldly designed products but the choice of colour has become of particular importance often changing seasonally and being inspired by trends you might more likely find in the fashion world.
