Normann Copenhagen Bell Lamp Medium

The Bell Lamp Medium is a lovely example of a good idea done well. With suspension light design it is quite common for an already recognisable form to be appropriated and reimagined as a lamp. With the Bell lamp it certainly doesn’t hurt that that form happens to be something that already hangs. With its smooth even surface reminiscent of a casting, its large hanging hoop and accentuated cable gathering the Bell’s design antecedents ring out loud and clear. This is no half hearted realisation, the Bell Lamp is robust in its appearance and in defense of its legitimacy, it is not a pastiche or novelty light, it is a genuinely pleasing form and deserving of its new purpose. Available in four sizes in black, grey, sand and white.

Jacob Rudbeck attended The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architect and Andreas Lund graduated from The Danish Design School in 2000. Both Jacob and Andreas run their own successful design studios, Jacob Rudbeck Design Consultancy and Andres Lund Design, but they decided to collaborate on selected projects after they met during various teaching jobs. One such project has been the Bell Light series for Normann Copenhagen which with its refined yet primitive design cues has been very well received both critically and with the public. For Jacob and Andreas design is industrial art, a furnace where function and form melt and meld to create new elements, new ideas and new practises. They want to continue the Scandinavian design tradition and make everyday items that fulfill their purpose without drawing unwarranted attention. Objects should be discovered and their characters explored, they should not be noticed simply because they shout the loudest.

Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up in 1999 hoping to find a new form of expression within the design industry. In 2002 they launched their first product, the lamp Norm 69 under the name: Normann Copenhagen, a brand was born. Within five years the Normann Copenhagen range consisted of almost 40 products including sculptural lighting, stunning textiles and clever home accessories and they had broadened their design horizons by collaborating with established names as well new talents from around the world. In 2009 Normann Copenhagen decided it was time to introduce furniture pieces as well, original, bold and eye-catching pieces with simple and contemporary designs that could withstand the test of time. Today Normann Copenhagen continues to introduce exciting and boldly designed products but the choice of colour has become of particular importance often changing seasonally and being inspired by trends you might more likely find in the fashion world.
