Lightyears Concert Pendant

During his work in creating Concert, Jørn Utzon sought to develop a pendant with its own pure and organic idiom of design. The final shade configuration is visually characteristic of Utzon and is reminiscent of his greatest work, the Sydney Opera House. The Concert is built up of four upper shades and a lower parabola of white lacquered drawn steel, which are mounted on an internal suspension unit made of hand-blown, acid etched glass. This suspension unit creates a pleasant, even light between the shades and at the same time illuminates the two upward elements and part of the white textured cord. The bottom shade casts light downward to the parabola, which then diffuses it, not only softening the light but also preventing glare regardless of the height of the lamp.

Jørn Utzon was born in 1918 and is certainly one of the most important of all 20th-century Danish architects and designers. He derived his earliest inspiration from foreign architects such as Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose organic conception of architecture was of great significance for Utzon's own expressive and sculptural nature-inspired architecture and product design. Utzon experienced his international breakthrough in 1957 when he rather surprisingly won the international competition to build an opera house in Sydney in Australia, a visionary building project with a roof consisting of 60-metre-high concrete shells opening out towards the harbour like billowing sails. For various reasons, Utzon resigned as architect to the project in 1966, but the Opera House, which is considered to be one of the most important 20th-century works of architecture, made Utzon rightly famous and resulted in his being given high profile commissions all around the world.

Lightyears, part of the Fritz Hansen Group, is a Danish light company that takes great pride in creating lighting products that combine both tradition and renewal. The core ambition of the company lies in the fusion of the young and the established. Lightyears embraces the curiosity and boldness of the up-and-coming generation, but equally they respect the skill and the trained eye of the older more experienced designers. This collaboration produces modern interpretations of established lighting products and it is Lightyears intention that these new incarnations speak for themselves on how and where to use contemporary illumination. The collection is functional, progressive, timeless and always represents good value for money. Lightyears cooperate with several of Danish design's most innovative and recognised designers like Jørn Utzon, Salto & Sigsgaard, Cecilie Manz, Morten Voss, Mads Odgaard as well as the Japanese designer Hidenori Kuge and the Danish/Italian design duo GamFratesi.
