Gubi Pedrera ABC

Barba Corsini was possibly not the first choice to design the furnishings for the loft space of Barcelona’s Pedrera building considering that he was a functionalist architect with ascetic Finnish leanings and the Pedrera was designed by Antoni Gaudi the most extravagant and unclassifiable of all the Spanish modernists. However this marriage of equal differentials created a range of products which escaped the confines of context and have become recognised as classics in the wider world. Powerful simplicity is an apt description when discussing the Pedrera ABC Table lamp. You will struggle to find any Gaudi antecedents in Corsini’s design but no matter the lamp is a thing of striking singular beauty in its own right. There is nothing extraneous, nothing unnecessary, it is merely a diffuser within a perforated tube on slim wire legs. It would be difficult to conceive of anything simpler, the trick though is to think of it first.

Barba Corsini (1916-2008) was a leading functionalist architect who like many architects and furniture designers of the Bauhaus era was intent on providing well-designed homes and impeccably manufactured furnishings for the so called common man. In 1955, Corsini realised his contemporary vision through his renovation of the loft space of Antoni Gaudi’s La Pedrera building and through the furnishings he custom designed for it. Corsini was a great admirer of Finnish architecture, which he believed to be the finest in Europe on account of the powerful simplicity and accessibility of the designs. Powerful simplicity is indeed an apt description of Corsini's personal design ethos, as represented by the Pedrera series for which he won international praise. The Pedrera lamps are both modern and classic, most of which were designed solely by Corsini and others in association with his protegé, Joaquim Ruiz Millet who also designed the ANA pendant as a lasting tribute to his brilliant mentor.

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen. They initially focused on producing Olsen's furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector but changed direction in 2001 after they were joined by their sons who had returned after some years working in the fashion industry. Since then Gubi have transposed the original creative vision into a contemporary context, placing themselves on the map as a global player on the design scene. They see themselves as treasure hunters, where curiosity, courage and intuition are key components for success. It involves travelling, searching and finding long forgotten remnants from the past as well as contemporary, cutting-edge designs from new artists on the horizon. In an ever-changing international landscape, it takes an enormous amount of drive and determination to keep chasing icons. It's that type of endless energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit which has catapulted Gubi into an iconic status all its own.
