George Nelson Bubble Lamp Wall Sconce Saucer

Of all the lights from the feverish design period of the late forties and early fifties the George Nelson Bubble series are probably the most loved. Originally designed in 1947 and put into production by Herman Miller in the early fifties the lamps have now achieved the status of mid century classic. Unsurpassed in their apparent simplicity the purity of the design hides a great deal of complexity and forced a number of innovations in manufacturing. The polymer skin remains white when illuminated giving a very beautiful calming and if necessary bright light which emphasises the stark precision of the internal frame. The Bubble Lamps are immutable and as such float effortlessly above a churning world that demands change in all things.

George Nelson was born in the USA in 1908 and graduated from Yale University in 1928. Nelson originally had no intention of becoming an architect but happened upon the Yale architecture school by accident when seeking shelter from a storm. Nelson achieved some early recognition while still an undergraduate and had some work published in Pencil Points and Architecture magazine. Nelson was to quickly to become a modernist voice arguing against the status quo stating too many concessions were made to the commercial forces within the design industry. Nelson believed that the purity of the design should come first, that it was the responsibility of the designer to improve the world. Following this belief to its natural conclusion Nelson went on to become Director of Design for Herman Miller guiding it through its most prolific modernist period, he also ran his own studio which designed many of the twentieth century's most iconic and enduring furniture.

Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of integrity, so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century, the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with “modern” furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the company produced pieces that would become classics of industrial design. Today, in addition to their classic pieces, Herman Miller is a recognised innovator in contemporary interior furnishings, solutions for healthcare environments and related technologies and services. A publicly held company headquartered in Zeeland, Michigan, they have manufacturing facilities in the United States, China, Italy and the United Kingdom.
