Flos Romeo Moon F

The Romeo Moon F is part of a range of beautiful floor, table and ceiling lights from Flos. Designed by the inimitable Philippe Starck the lights demonstrate the near ceaseless pleasure he takes in hidden detail. It could be argued that the internal diffuser in the Romeo Moon does not necessarily need to be made from acid etched borosilicate glass but that is the whole point, it is there to be discovered. Resting in a delicate yolk at the top of the grey light stem the diffuser can only be seen if you look for it. It has a purpose other than being something worth finding as it softens and focuses the not inconsiderable light, giving a beautiful steady presence. The rest of the lamp of course is designed to be seen and is very worthy of our attention from the large disc base to the grey metal stem topped with the pressed glass outer shade which has a weight and solidity belied by its appearance. The Romeo Moon F has a sister light the Romeo Soft which has the same lovely details but also an ivory pleated fabric shade instead of ribbed glass.

Philippe Starck was born in 1949 in Paris, France. The son of an aeronautical engineer, Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris. Starck's first iconoclastic designs, an early indicator of Starck's interest in where and how people live, brought him to the attention of Pierre Cardin who offered him a job as artistic director of his publishing house. At the same time, Starck set up his first industrial design company, Starck Product and began working with manufacturers in Italy and internationally. His concept of democratic design led him to focus on mass-produced consumer goods rather than one-off pieces. Starck's prolific output expanded to include furniture, decoration, architecture and basically everything in between. The buildings he designed went against traditional norms, the first, in Tokyo was clad in a living material that evolved over time. Starck believes that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible, he is a true renaissance man.

For fifty years Flos have been crafting objects out of light. Light is the medium they work in order to express new ideas and illuminate emotions. Flos see the future, embrace the past and live in the present, facing the challenges and choices that have shaped their image and identity. History has taught them to fan the flames of provocation into new poetic notions of functionality, to trust intuition, to dare to create products that no one else would and to establish new typologies and archetypes. Flos are connected to the old masters of design yet happy to promote new talents, to command high technological status, to be revered for what they have done and what they might yet do. Flos open the way through experimentation and the use of revolutionary materials, they strive to conceive new languages around light and to chart new aesthetics, new freedoms for living. Flos walk the fine line between art and design, craftsmanship and industry, between an individual idea and the collective imagination.
