Nineteen 33 Loose Cover Sofa

The Nineteen 33 loose cover sounds like a very time specific sofa but in truth it is more about being evocative than being absolutely true to period. The thirties was a very diverse design decade, try saying that with a mouth full of digestives. There was still a hint of wildness but also more consideration, more restraint, which after the post war headiness of the twenties was no bad thing. The tight scroll arm became a design staple, especially in European hotels and has survived to this day due to its practicality and timeless quality. The Nineteen 33 is a lovely compact sofa, less deep as standard and with a choice of tapered or turned leg, a lovely surprise detail, hidden as it is by the skirt. The cover is removable and made slightly large to allow for shrinkage when first washed. For a smaller sofa it is wonderfully comfortable and there are also fixed cover and set back arm, tee front versions available. It may not have the glamour of some of our larger more elaborate sofas but if a quiet delightful presence is called for then the Nineteen 33 is a perfect fit.
