The Random is a wonderful ‘What if’ light. You know what I mean, when you have a great idea and think ‘What if’ and then almost immediately think ‘Nah’, much too hard. In this case the designer, Bertjan Pot for Moooi, carried the ‘What if’ all the way through to completion. ‘What if we wrapped a long continuous strand of drained fibreglass round and round a large inflatable silicon ball in a completely random pattern and then when the fibre glass had set pulled the deflated ball out through a hole large enough to reach in and change the light bulb through?’ Genius. The result is one of the most iconic light designs of recent years, a perfect ball of apparently spun thread that supports its own weight without any frame. The random works well with almost any bulb from a vintage hand wound incandescent through to the latest LED and comes in three sizes and in black or white. With a new integral dimmable LED version now also available you at once have the pendent light reinvented.
