There is more to the Melampo than meets the eye. At first glance it appears to be a normal, if rather beautifully designed and crafted table lamp. But then, by lifting the shade, due to an integrated cleft and adjustment assembly, it can become an angled lamp with three positions, the third being the shade fully raised as an uplighter. The satin silk shade diffuses the light and gives off an even glow whether it is in the up or in the down position. Adrien designed the Melampo as a floor light for Artemide in 2000 as a gentle riposte to what he saw as the inevitable limitations of the standard, standard lamp. The table versions swiftly followed in two designs and in three subtle colours proving that it is possible to turn even the oldest idea on its head.
