Tom Dixon was born in 1959 in Sfax, Tunisia. Dixon rose to prominence in the mid 1980s as a talented untrained designer who set up ‘Space’ a creative think-tank and shop front. By the late 1980s, he was working for Cappellini for whom he designed the Iconic ‘S’ chair. He became a household name with Jack, his polyethylene sitting, stacking, lighting thing and in 1998 was appointed head of design by Habitat and later Creative Director. In 2001, Dixon was given an OBE and in 2002 established his own brand, launching its first accessories range at Maison et Objet, Paris. The company’s products are now sold in 65 countries. In 2007 Dixon launched Design Research Studio and has completed projects including Restaurant at The Royal Academy, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant, Barbecoa, as well as recently announcing their first ever hotel project, redesigning the iconic Thames-side Sea Containers House. His work has been acquired by great museums including the V&A, MoMA and the Pompidou, Paris.
