Playsam Streamliner

The Streamliner is probably Playsam’s most successful toy. Its shape is immediately recognisable as the archetypal car, pared back to no more than an idea on wheels. As a leading Scandinavian design company working in the competitive world of toys Playsam play by different rules. They have developed a beautiful range of wooden toys that are not only timeless but also ageless, bought not only for the young but also by the young at heart. Playsam toys don’t distinguish between the grown up collector and the playful child, it does not matter if they are kept on a high shelf or in a toybox on the floor, Playsam toys can handle it. Made from robust solid beech with a fantastic high gloss paint finish they are lovely to hold and behold, seamless vehicles of both art and imagination.

Ulf Hanses came to Stockholm as a nineteen-year-old apprentice to Sigvard Bernadotte, the Swedish design prince. Hanses attended art school in the evenings and rounded off his formal education at the school of industrial arts. After two years he broke off his studies and set up his own workshop in Stockholm where he remained for seven before returning to his hometown of Borlänge. In the early 1980s he developed a toy programme for handicapped children but the climate was harsh for such ideas and Ulf felt unappreciated. Instead he turned to more commercial work and gained commissions from Boda Nova, Ikea, Playsam and Handitech to name a few. Ulf has learnt to rely on his own intuition as a designer, the Streamliner, the little wooden car for Playsam, was not designed to order, Ulf's inspiration does not run on rails.

Playsam have been making wonderful wooden toys since 1984 and have become one of the leading design companies in Scandinavia. They are a very small team that punch above their weight creating instantly recognisable designs whose beautiful sleek lines grace the collections of many design museums around the world. Made mostly from wood, metal and with the occasional plastic crash helmet Playsam achieve their unique finish through nothing more technical than hard work and skill. The deep gloss is created by applying many coats of paint to a perfectly prepared surface until the object takes on an almost super real quality. Holding a Playsam toy is a surreal pleasure one enjoyed both by adult collectors and children alike. Classic and contemporary, fanciful and functional, simple and sophisticated, these characteristics may seem slightly contradictory but Playsam firmly believe that contradiction is the key to success. Playsam is a small company with a big name.
