Gubi Turbo Pendant

Louis Weisdorf's Turbo Pendant, was originally conceived in 1965 and after many design iterations was put into production in 1967. A technical tour de force the turbo achieved great success over many years until it fell out of production. Now rediscovered and reissued by Gubi it is one of the latest finds in the company's ongoing quest to uncover forgotten design icons from the past. It illustrates design at its very best, simple in form, yet complex in structure and combines a sense of lightness, movement and strength in a beautiful sculptural whole. The Turbo Pendant is made of 12 equal aluminium slats, spirally twisted and mounted together, creating both its spherical shape and a means to hide the light source whilst providing a beautifully diffused light.

In his own words, the studio of Architect Louis Weisdorf (born 1939) specialises in versatility. This, quite perfectly, sums up the long and notable career of this multi talented designer. Since graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture in 1954, Weisdorf has excelled in everything from graphic, interior and industrial design, to the planning of parks as well as many fields within the building trade. His work often exhibits a form that appears simple in conception yet has great complexity in structure and execution and which through ingenious construction combines lightness with strength. It is this juxtaposition that attracts him to the architecture and design of Japan. This fascination is reflected in some of his best work, the Turbo for example. Now made by Gubi it is a design that is almost fifty years old and its reissue is the cherry on an impressive résumé which includes working with such greats as Verner Panton, Poul Henningsen and Le Klint.

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen. They initially focused on producing Olsen's furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector but changed direction in 2001 after they were joined by their sons who had returned after some years working in the fashion industry. Since then Gubi have transposed the original creative vision into a contemporary context, placing themselves on the map as a global player on the design scene. They see themselves as treasure hunters, where curiosity, courage and intuition are key components for success. It involves travelling, searching and finding long forgotten remnants from the past as well as contemporary, cutting-edge designs from new artists on the horizon. In an ever-changing international landscape, it takes an enormous amount of drive and determination to keep chasing icons. It's that type of endless energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit which has catapulted Gubi into an iconic status all its own.
