Gubi Gräshoppa Floor Lamp

Time has not been very kind to Greta Grossman so it is appropriate and deserving that the work of this largely forgotten designer is undergoing something of a revival. Gubi have reissued two of her most influential lights the Gräshoppa and the Cobra in the hope that Gretta may take her rightful place alongside the more venerated and mostly male designers of the fifties and sixties. The wonderful Gräshoppa floor lamp was first produced in 1947 and is just as startling and original today as it was then. The tubular steel body is tilted backwards creating one of its three legs, each of which ends with a small disc foot. The spun steel conical shade is ball-jointed onto the arm so that the light can be directed and any glare contained. The whole lamp is powder coated in a range of muted near matt colours creating a mood of complete acceptance whatever its surroundings.

Greta Grossman (1906-1999) maintained a prolific forty-year career on the two continents of Europe and North America. Her achievements were many and encompassed industrial design, interior design and architecture. In 1933, having successfully completed her fellowship at the renowned Stockholm arts institution, Konstfack, she opened Studio, a combined store and workshop. During the same year Grossman married jazz musician, Billy Grossman with whom she later emigrated to the United States, settling in Los Angeles. Throughout the 40's and 50's Grossman was at the height of her powers and designed a number of iconic products that are highly regarded to this day. It is incredible then that a designer who enjoyed such success and who exhibited her designs at museums worldwide has today slipped into near obscurity. Sadly though this is a common fate for a certain type of designer, those that are not remembered for their work but are forgotten for their sex.

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen. They initially focused on producing Olsen's furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector but changed direction in 2001 after they were joined by their sons who had returned after some years working in the fashion industry. Since then Gubi have transposed the original creative vision into a contemporary context, placing themselves on the map as a global player on the design scene. They see themselves as treasure hunters, where curiosity, courage and intuition are key components for success. It involves travelling, searching and finding long forgotten remnants from the past as well as contemporary, cutting-edge designs from new artists on the horizon. In an ever-changing international landscape, it takes an enormous amount of drive and determination to keep chasing icons. It's that type of endless energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit which has catapulted Gubi into an iconic status all its own.
