Artemide Nessino

The Nessino is a new smaller version of the Nesso table lamp. The Nesso was a simple experiment in light by Giancarlo Mattioli with the the new material of the day, thermoplastic. The result was a dramatic reimagining of the table lamp that captured the space age sensibility of the time and went on to become one of the most famous lights of the sixties. Anything was now possible and it seemed plastic was the right stuff to do it. Reinvented and liberated from its lowly status by a whole new breed of daring designers plastic was everywhere in everything, from chairs to clothes to table lights. Now reissued by Artemide the Nesso is once again available in its original opaque orange and white and with the introduction of the new smaller Nessino it just goes to show that some things never get old.

Giancarlo Mattioli was born in Italy in 1933, and as a designer rose to considerable fame and acclaim during the 1950s and 60s. This was the time when anything was possible, war was behind us and man was about to embark on his greatest adventure yet, the boundless reaches of space. Mattioli captured the moment perfectly, in bright orange plastic with quite probably his most celebrated work, the Nesso Table Lamp. The Nesso went on to extraordinary success and is still made to exactly the same design to this day and is now part of the permanent collection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and exhibited in other important museums around the world. Giancarlo continued to develop his work and won first prize at the Studio Artemide Domus competition in Milan in 1965 and in the late 1960s formed the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti "Città Nuova" together with Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato and Mario Zaffagnini.
