&Tradition Utzon JU1 Pendant

The JU1 is a beautiful light designed early in the career of an architect and designer who would go on to design one of the most famous and recognisable buildings in the world. Jørn Utzon was intrigued by all things nautical, this was probably because his father, a naval engineer, was constantly poring over the blueprints of ships and Jørn would study them at every opportunity. This childhood fascination became a lifelong love and the lines of ships and boats a recurring theme in his work. This is evident in the JU1 which was designed in 1947 with a gentle oceanic sensibility, the shape somehow capturing the romance of a great ship, the break of a wave and the cool northern light. Now reissued by &Tradition and available in Copper and White the JU1 is a perfect, fleeting moment in the constant architectural evolution that occurred in the mind of the man who would later design the Sydney Opera House.

Jørn Utzon was born in 1918 and is certainly one of the most important of all 20th-century Danish architects and designers. He derived his earliest inspiration from foreign architects such as Alvar Aalto and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose organic conception of architecture was of great significance for Utzon's own expressive and sculptural nature-inspired architecture and product design. Utzon experienced his international breakthrough in 1957 when he rather surprisingly won the international competition to build an opera house in Sydney in Australia, a visionary building project with a roof consisting of 60-metre-high concrete shells opening out towards the harbour like billowing sails. For various reasons, Utzon resigned as architect to the project in 1966, but the Opera House, which is considered to be one of the most important 20th-century works of architecture, made Utzon rightly famous and resulted in his being given high profile commissions all around the world.
