Gubi Bestlite BL2 Chrome

The Bestlite BL2 table lamp, part of the The Bestlite Collection from Gubi, has been in continuous production since 1930. Winston Churchill is numbered amongst Bestlite’s many famous users. The elegant Bestlite design was conceived by Robert Dudley Best who was highly influenced by the Bauhaus. Now over eighty years on, the Bestlite remains close to its industrial roots and true to its original design. Bestlite lamps are kept in permanent collections at both the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London. Loved by architects, designers and most importantly by its owners.

Robert Dudley Best was born in 1892 and was heir to the world's largest lighting factory which was founded in Birmingham in 1840. Despite its proud history, Best felt that the lamp designs produced by the factory were outdated and in 1925 he visited the International Exhibition of Modern Design in Paris, where many of the designs exhibited were influenced by the work of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. Inspired by what he had seen, Best began his studies of industrial design in Paris and Düsseldorf, where he became close friends with Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus movement. Bauhaus was a German art school that had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, graphic, interior and industrial design and became one of the most influential forces behind Modernist architecture. It was during his time in Paris and Düsseldorf that Best made the first sketches of what would become the iconic Bestlite design. Robert Dudley Best died in 1984.

Gubi was founded in 1967 by Gubi and Lisbeth Olsen. They initially focused on producing Olsen's furniture designs and selling textiles to the retail sector but changed direction in 2001 after they were joined by their sons who had returned after some years working in the fashion industry. Since then Gubi have transposed the original creative vision into a contemporary context, placing themselves on the map as a global player on the design scene. They see themselves as treasure hunters, where curiosity, courage and intuition are key components for success. It involves travelling, searching and finding long forgotten remnants from the past as well as contemporary, cutting-edge designs from new artists on the horizon. In an ever-changing international landscape, it takes an enormous amount of drive and determination to keep chasing icons. It's that type of endless energy, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit which has catapulted Gubi into an iconic status all its own.
