Normann Copenhagen Shorebird Black

The Shorebirds are by Danish designer and crime writer Sigurjón Pálsson. Made from solid oak with lacquered steel legs the Shorebirds are a perfect expression of all that Sigurjón strives for in his designs and writing. It is always his intention to capture the bare minimum, to revel in the simplicity of form, to cut away all that is unnecessary and leave only a recognisable sketch, an outline of the subject. In this instance, in the case of the larger bird, an elegant curlew is revealed and in the smaller, an industrious redshank. Sigurjón has captured their profiles perfectly as they wade and feed along the shoreline of your sideboard or shelves. Place them on their own or in groups of different birds, their various sizes will only add to the illusion and create extra calming depth.

Sigurjón Pálsson is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. After graduation he quickly began to earn a reputation working for renowned design companies before setting up his own and winning numerous awards for his designs in the process. Somewhat uniquely Pálsson has also distinguished himself in Denmark as a recognised writer of crime novels. He always strives to find the right combination of shape, function and materials in his designs with the aim of creating something that not only looks beautiful but also correct. It is his belief that looking right is always more beautiful than just looking beautiful, that when form, function and materials are combined in a simple harmonious way, the design will most likely find itself. Pálsson has always said that the key to perfection in design is simplicity and that the highest aim is to reach the bare minimum by cutting away all that is unnecessary.

Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up in 1999 hoping to find a new form of expression within the design industry. In 2002 they launched their first product, the lamp Norm 69 under the name: Normann Copenhagen, a brand was born. Within five years the Normann Copenhagen range consisted of almost 40 products including sculptural lighting, stunning textiles and clever home accessories and they had broadened their design horizons by collaborating with established names as well new talents from around the world. In 2009 Normann Copenhagen decided it was time to introduce furniture pieces as well, original, bold and eye-catching pieces with simple and contemporary designs that could withstand the test of time. Today Normann Copenhagen continues to introduce exciting and boldly designed products but the choice of colour has become of particular importance often changing seasonally and being inspired by trends you might more likely find in the fashion world.
