Flos Arco

Like some monochromatic rainbow with a pot of silver at the end of it the Arco has become the default design by which all other floor lamps are measured. The Arco is the Madonna of floor lamps, no other introduction is necessary, just one word says it all. Arco. Designed in 1962 by Archille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni the light broke almost every design convention of the time. A sweeping telescopic stainless steel arc is tethered by bolts to a 60 kg block of solid grey veined Carrara marble, used because the intended concrete base was considered to be too expensive. The marble has a single hole pierced through it to allow it to be more easily carried during manufacturer and to add a degree of vulnerability to its impenetrable mass. This huge lump of stone is there to counterbalance the bright polished adjustable light head which hangs implausibly on the end of the extended stem over two metres away. With an on/off floor switch and a choice of E27 or integral dimmable LED the Arco is, was and always will be brilliant.

Achille Giacomo Castiglioni was born in Milan, Italy in 1918 the younger brother of Pier who was born in 1913. After graduating in architecture in 1944, Achille joined his brother’s design practise and began research into shapes, techniques and new materials, aimed at developing an integral design process. The professional partnership of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni became one of the most witty, elegant and innovative partnerships in modern design history, responsible for such marvels as the Taccia lamp, the Snoopy lamp and the eccentric perfection of the Arco, which required two people and a broom handle to move it. The brothers worked from the viewpoint that design must restructure an object's function, form and production process and applied this maxim to everything that they produced. Castiglioni described this process with these words: Start from scratch. Stick to common sense. Know your goals and means.

For fifty years Flos have been crafting objects out of light. Light is the medium they work in order to express new ideas and illuminate emotions. Flos see the future, embrace the past and live in the present, facing the challenges and choices that have shaped their image and identity. History has taught them to fan the flames of provocation into new poetic notions of functionality, to trust intuition, to dare to create products that no one else would and to establish new typologies and archetypes. Flos are connected to the old masters of design yet happy to promote new talents, to command high technological status, to be revered for what they have done and what they might yet do. Flos open the way through experimentation and the use of revolutionary materials, they strive to conceive new languages around light and to chart new aesthetics, new freedoms for living. Flos walk the fine line between art and design, craftsmanship and industry, between an individual idea and the collective imagination.
